Grants of up to $50,000 to USA member independent high schools, as well as national, regional, state and local independent school associations, to support and strengthen the schools. Previous grants have funded capital projects, curriculum, professional development and financial aid, as well as special programs pertaining to the environment, technology, and pluralism.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Traditional Grants: These grants are made in response to requests that can range from $25,000 to $100,000

Leadership Grants: These grants are made in response to proposals that can be for requests of up to $250,000.

Term of Contract:

Funds granted to associations may be expended over a period of three years or at one time.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The applying School must:
- Serve a 9-12th grade program
- Be a member of NAIS
- Have a current Head of School who has served a full 2 years (Traditional Grant) or 3 years (Leadership Grant) before a proposal from the school can be considered and must remain in the role for the period of time specified to raise the match
- Not have applied for funding from the EE Ford Foundation within the last 4 years

- The school or association must have a mission to serve a diverse population.

- If a school or association has received a grant from the Foundation in the past, it must have shown that it has been a good steward of our prior philanthropy. This includes timely submission of stewardship reports and appropriate accounting for any past grants that included funds for permanently restricted endowments.

- For schools with significant financial resources, there is an expectation that the school will seek funding from the Foundation to “leverage its unique talents, expertise and resources to advance teaching and learning” more broadly and not just to benefit the school itself.

- Successful schools generally have a little more than one year to raise the required matching funds and to provide the required documentation for a Traditional Grant and a little more than two years for a Leadership Grant. The specific date by which the match must be made is always specified in the formal documents awarding the grant. Once the school has submitted the documentation, the EE Ford grant is paid by J.P. Morgan, the Foundation’s trustee.

Pre-Application Information:

National, regional, state and local independent school associations located in the United States and other similar member associations where a majority of the member schools are otherwise eligible to make proposals to the Foundation, may be eligible to apply for a Traditional Grant as a part of either the June or November Agenda. Other domestic associations or organizations pursuing significant work in the independent school world can be considered upon the recommendation of the Executive Director to the Board. How to Apply for Traditional Grants

1. The first step in the Agenda Placement process is for the Head of School to schedule a phone call with the Foundation's Executive Director. No proposal can be considered from schools that have not reserved a place on an upcoming Agenda.

2. After this phone call, if your school is placed on an Agenda, you will receive an Agenda Placement Confirmation Letter with further instruction. Only once you have received that letter should you begin the online application.

3. Set up a 2-3 hour meeting between the Head of School and our Executive Director

4. Send the following materials as hard copies via mail one week prior to this scheduled meeting:
- A hard copy of the completed online application: You will have to complete the data entry online first. Once you’ve entered all of the data into the online application do NOT click "Submit". Please print the form and send a hard copy.
- A college placement list for the last 3 years: Please format with the following columns in portrait orientation: Colleges, years 1-2-3 and a column totaling the number of students that attended each college.
- A 2-year Comparative Operating Budget: Please limit to one page, which should include the current year’s operating budget, the last school year’s operating budget, and the last school year’s actual budget results.

If you are applying as an Association, please submit the following via mail at least one week prior to this meeting:
- Cover Sheet
- Supplementary Materials
- A 2-year Comparative Operating Budget – Please limit to one page, which should include the current year’s operating budget, the last year’s operating budget and the last year’s actual budget results.

5. The Foundation Office will make arrangements for Executive Director to visit and tour your school.

6. Deadlines for submission of final materials are:
- April 1 (for the June Agenda)
- September 15 (for the November Agenda)

How to Apply for Leadership Grants

1. The first step in the Agenda Placement process is for the Head of School to schedule a phone call with the Foundation's Executive Director. No proposal can be considered from schools that have not first reserved a place on an upcoming Agenda.

2. If your school is placed on a Leadership Grant Agenda, you will receive an Agenda Placement Confirmation Letter with further instruction. You should only begin your preliminary Leadership Grant proposal once you have received this confirmation letter. Deadline for submission of the preliminary proposal is October 1.

3. If your proposal is selected to move on to the finalist round, you will be notified by approximately December 15.

4. Deadlines for submission of final materials is March 1

How to Apply for Associations

1. The first step in the Agenda Placement process is for the Executive Director of your Association to schedule a phone call with the EE Ford Foundation's Executive Director. No proposal can be considered from schools that have not reserved a place on an upcoming Agenda.

2. After this phone call, if your association is placed on an Agenda, you will receive an Agenda Placement Confirmation Letter with further instruction. Only once you have received that letter should you begin the online application

September 15 (for the November Agenda)

All grants much be matched at least one-to-one (1:1). The Board expects matching funds will be used for the same general purpose as the grant monies.
