Grants to Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina nonprofits, public school districts, and IHEs for programs to promote scholastic achievement among young students in grades K-3 and to foster excellence in teaching and leadership in K-12 public schools. Potential applicants must first take an eligibility quiz, which will direct them to a Letter of Inquiry.

Funding is intended to improve public education for the students of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The Foundation also considers select state-level initiatives in North Carolina that align with key areas of focus and have evidence of or strong potential for large-scale impact.

The goal of the grant program is to help lower the achievement gap between low- and high-income students and to ensure high-quality education for all children. To that end, the Belk Foundation has two areas that it is interested in supporting:

  • K-3 Achievement: Increasing the number of children in grades K-3 who achieve on or above grade level in core subjects
  • Quality Teaching and Leading: Increasing quality teaching and leading in K-12 public schools

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Foundation supports non-profit organizations with a 501(c)3 status as well as direct grants to public school systems and institutes of higher education.

In certain circumstances you may apply through a fiscal sponsor. The fiscal sponsor must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has a formal relationship with the organization working on the project. Please note that in such cases the grant goes to the fiscal sponsor directly, and the fiscal sponsor is responsible for the proper expenditure of funds and all reporting requirements.

Grants from The Belk Foundation are not awarded to:
- Individuals
- Private elementary or secondary schools
- International programs and/or organizations
- Organizations for the primary purpose of fundraising. This includes sponsoring events or providing door prizes, gift certificates, merchandise or other giveaways

Pre-Application Information:

Application Process:
- Step 1: Determine your fit and take Eligibility Quiz
If you find there is a strong alignment between your organization’s work and the Foundation's mission, please complete the Foundation's Eligibility Quiz.

- Step 2: Submit a Letter of Inquiry
If your organization meets the basic eligibility requirements laid out in the Eligibility Quiz, you will then be directed to a Letter of Inquiry form.
Note: The Foundation will only review correspondence that is submitted electronically. Please do not mail a hard copy of your inquiry or any supplementary material unless otherwise requested by Foundation staff.

Within a few weeks of receiving your inquiry, the Foundation will notify you to let you know whether your organization/program appears to be a fit with the Foundation’s desired outcomes.

- Step 3: Submit a Grant Application (by invitation only)
The Belk Foundation staff will contact you if you have been selected to submit an application. The Foundation conducts two grantmaking cycles per year—one in May, one in November. Spring cycle applications are issued mid-February, and fall applications are issued mid-August.

- Step 4: Proposal Review & Funding Determination
Final applications are presented to the Grants Committee, and subsequently to the Board of Directors, for approval. The Board meets in May and November to make final funding decisions. The Belk Foundation staff will notify you after funding decisions are confirmed.
